“A Place to Go When You Need to Hide” is a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit, as seen through the lens of singer-songwriter Rose Alaimo. The album, released on October 27, 2023, is a cathartic journey through life’s highs and lows, delivered with raw emotion and poignant honesty.

From the opening track, “Meet Me Where I Am,” Alaimo, who introduces herself on Bandcamp as a one-lady band from Ithaca, New York, draws listeners into her world. The song’s haunting melody and evocative lyrics set the tone for the album, hinting at the emotional rollercoaster to come. The artist’s voice, reminiscent of Dolores O’Riordan from The Cranberries, conveys a depth of feeling that resonates deeply.

The album progresses through a range of moods and styles, each track offering a fresh perspective. “Stars” and “Power Lines” showcase Alaimo’s knack for crafting songs with unusual range and depth. I love her beautiful harmonies. “Stars” is one of those songs I have to play on repeat. While the introspective “I Guess I Feel OK?” delves deeper into the complexities of the human condition. “The Devil That You Know” anchors the album’s midpoint with its tantalizing refrain of “The devil, you know, is the one I miss. The devil, you know, is the one I kiss.” Yes, we know him well.

“The Dark Of Light” appears just before the denoument bookend “Here I Am.” Alaimo’s vocals soar above a rich tapestry of instrumentation, creating a sonic landscape that is both captivating and moving. And “Here I Am” brings the album full circle. The lines, “If you’re looking for some shelter it can always be found,” lead into a refrain of do-do-do’s that provide a poignant counterpoint to this “strange world.”

The accompanying lyrics booklet adds another layer of depth to the album. Each song is a raw exploration of Alaimo’s personal journey, from dealing with career burnout and Lyme disease to navigating the societal tensions of the COVID-19 era.
