Taco Tapes – Keep On The Shady Side (Cassette, Digital, 2023)
No.5219
GAJOOB Review by Bryan Baker:
“Keep On The Shady Side”, the third full-length album from Taco Tapes, is a beautifully crafted work that is both nostalgic and innovative. Its amalgamation of psych rock, hip-hop, Latin jazz, and old-timey freak folk creates an intriguing soundscape that is as eclectic as it is cohesive.
The album’s modern throwback vibe is immediately captivating, with a psych-folk undertone that adds a unique flavor to the music. The ensemble cast of musicians brings a dynamic energy to the album, making each track feel like a lively jam session among friends.
What sets “Keep On The Shady Side” apart, however, is its thematic depth. Described as a loose concept album, it explores the fringes of society from the perspective of Pacific Northwest millennials. The music is introspective and dark, yet paradoxically danceable, striking a delicate balance between tragedy and humor, shade and light.
Each song on the album is meticulously produced, with clear influences from a range of musical genres. The recording process itself seems to have been a collaborative effort, with Taco Tapes and Alan F. Jones at the helm and additional contributions from a host of others, including Bart Budwig, Stephen Fiske, Olaf Ydstie, Jeremy James Meyer, Nevada Sowle, Brett Sisun, and Roselind Bay.
“Keep On The Shady Side” is a triumph for Taco Tapes. It showcases the band’s versatility and creativity, while also offering a fresh take on traditional musical styles. Whether you’re a fan of psych-folk, hip-hop, or just good music in general, this album is definitely worth a listen.
