“Kumoyo Island”, the fifth and final studio album from Kikagaku Moyo, is a sublime journey into an imagined island of the band’s creation. It’s an eclectic mix of music that manages to be both introspective and danceable, providing an immersive listening experience that is as engaging as it is enjoyable.
The album’s standout track (for me) is arguably “Yayoi, Iyayoi”, a beautiful composition that perfectly encapsulates the band’s unique blend of styles. However, each song offers its own distinct flavor, making the album a veritable buffet of auditory delights.
Described as a “euphoric mind-trip”, “Kumoyo Island” does indeed transport the listener to another place. The music is at once familiar and foreign, blending traditional Japanese folk influences with elements of psych rock (and much more), creating a soundscape that is as diverse as it is harmonious.
The band’s decision to record in their hometown of Tokyo adds an extra layer of authenticity to the music. The sense of comfort and familiarity is palpable, adding a warmth and richness to the album that is truly captivating.
The artwork, designed by Gijs Flieling, further enhances the immersive nature of the album, drawing the listener into the band’s imagined world.
“Kumoyo Island” is a fitting (much too soon if true) swan song for Kikagaku Moyo. It’s a testament to the band’s creativity and musical prowess, and a fitting end to their decade-long career. Whether you’re a long-time fan or new to their music, this album is definitely worth a listen.
