Monkey Power Trio – Future Past Present (vinyl, 2001)

No.3357

ARTIST/LABEL NOTES:

his year, the boys wrote a song about a multi-cultural teen rebellion that took place many years ago aboard a steamship. They also wrote a song where one of them tries to communicate with a Musical Articulation Test Tone. If that weren’t enough, there’s even a song inspired by the holy trinity: William Shatner, The Blair Witch Project and Spinal Tap. Oh, and there’s also a song that they want to sell to an advertising agency. If you can help with that, it would be appreciated.

GAJOOB Review by Bryan Baker, 1/30/2002:

The Monkey Power Trio only meets one day a year, to blast away in the studio for a few hours. They’ve been doing it for seven years. On this here 7-inch slab of 45 RPM vinyl, we get four songs, rattling with noisy guitar bashing, diving into lofi mud and wrestling with gothic drones and lurching feedback. They say there’s a song inspired by William Shatner, the Blair Witch Project and Spinal Tap; song about Musical Articulation Test Tones; and a song about teen rebellion aboard a steamship. These are themes near and dear to our heart, of course. And I find myself chanting choruses about cars and driving to get away. Go man go.

It is basically the sound of a man having a nervous breakdown. But I generally do some of my best work when I’m hovering on the edge of insanity.Jim Shelley
