Frog Power – Frog Power (Digital, 2023)

No.5214

GAJOOB Review by Bryan Baker:

The enigmatic “Frog Power” by Frog Power is a glorious cacophony of sound that refuses to be pigeonholed. From the brittle acoustic guitars and distorted vocals, to the trap drums and vintage arp synth lines, this album is an exploration into sonic madness that is both disconcerting and utterly captivating.

A first listen of “Frog Power” is like stepping into a world where everything is slightly out of tune. The melodies twist and turn, the rhythms stumble and falter, and yet somehow, it all comes together to create something truly mesmerising.

The lead lines are particularly intriguing, with their mellotron-like warble adding a layer of mystery to the mix. Are they guitar, voice, or synth? It’s hard to tell, and that’s part of the charm. The use of modulation and filters as additional instruments also adds a level of depth and complexity to the music that keeps you coming back for more.

It’s clear that Frog Power’s approach to music-making is anything but conventional. Yet, it’s this unconventional nature that makes this album so intriguing.

The standout track for me was “echo”, a song that hardly encapsulates the album’s unique sound, but the magic of Frog Power is forever unencapsulated I think. “controversial thoughts on the anti-christ” is another favorite, taking things further into the enigmatically frog power realm. “feline” dips into an underwater shimmer of vocals that is truly sublime.

“Frog Power” is the kind of album that you’ll want to share with everyone, yet keep as your own little secret. It’s the kind of music that makes you feel like you’re part of an exclusive club, privy to a sound that’s unlike anything else out there.

It’s a beautifully chaotic mess of an album that has to be heard. It’s a testament to the power of creativity and the endless possibilities of sound. If you’re looking for something a little different, a little offbeat, and a whole lot of fun, then this album is definitely worth checking out.
