Daniel M Karlsson – Mapping the valleys of the uncanny (Book & CD, Digital, 2023)

No.5215

GAJOOB Review by Bryan Baker:

In his latest work, “Mapping the Valleys of the Uncanny,” Daniel M Karlsson takes us on a fascinating exploration into the realm of algorithmic composition. Released in November 2023, the album is a profound investigation into the process and method of music creation, challenging our perceptions of reality through sound.

The album is a collection of fourteen tracks that weave together harmonic language with varying densities of sound. Harmonic bowed, struck and blown drone patterns echoing with drama and punctuated percussives. Tracks such as “Intersections of Traversals” and “A faint sound in an adjacent room” exemplify this approach, creating a sense of translucency and opacity in their soundscapes. The music, at times, seems to exist in an ever-shifting array of imaginary rooms, populated by players unconstrained by the laws of acoustics.

Karlsson’s use of timbre and entrances and exits serve as essential building blocks in his compositions. The resultant sound creates an illusion of an impossible ensemble music that never was, a dream-like state where the traditional constraints of music are cast aside.

Accompanying the music is a labyrinth-like text, written concurrently with the composition of the music. This text offers intriguing insights into Karlsson’s thought process and reflections on the social and political role of the artistic identity. It draws extensively from philosophy, political theory, and popular culture, offering a shifting narrative perspective that keeps the reader engaged.

One of the standout tracks, “Recognizing patterns,” perfectly encapsulates the album’s ethos. The piece is a beautiful amalgamation of sound that challenges the listener’s perception of music and reality. It leaves you questioning, exploring, and ultimately appreciating the intricacy of Karlsson’s work.

In conclusion, “Mapping the Valleys of the Uncanny” is an audacious exploration into the world of algorithmic composition. Daniel M Karlsson masterfully challenges our perceptions of reality through sound, creating a work of structural and sensorial beauty. It’s a must-listen for those interested in experimental music and its intersection with philosophy and political theory.
